Le Corbusier once said, “A house is a machine for living in.” However, while I was in graduate school, one of my teachers told us, “A house could be a machine for gathering solar energy.” That became my mission as I designed amongst the first generation of solar houses.
Passive and active solar design had just been invented and it was taking on many experimental new forms. Face most windows to the south, shade them from the summer sun with overhanging sunscreens to prevent excessive heat gain in summer, put solar panels on the pitched roof facing south.
